Poetry, short stories, children's literature and essays by Filipinos in the diaspora fill Our Own Voice, a handsome coffee table soft cover book co-published by the Philippine Women's University and Firstfruits Book Design & Publishing. The full color 10 x 9 1/2 spills over with rich colored artworks, reproductions, photography and illustrations complimenting what will be one of the fastest growing body of literature in the 21st century: Contemporary Philippine literature. A number of established names in Filipino literati have contributed to the online literary ezine turned "print" for its first 5 issues, e.g. poets, Eileen Tabios, Luis Cabalquinto and Luisa Igloria. The Bookshelf section attests to the growith of recently published works that mark the growing communities of Filipinos outside of the Philippines.

Customer Rating: Summary: A Literary Goldmine: "Our Own Voice" Comment: In our current lives of information overload, there is a place we can go to where the pleasure of "responsibility for putting out our image, painting our portraits, instead of leaving our documented reflections in the hands of non-Filipinos who have no ethnic investment in us" (Welcome Readers, Maiden Issue 2001)is apparent, even tangible.
Our Own Voice www.oovrag.com/~oov was launched in the web world in January 2001. Subtle in its presence it slowly made its way to the Filipino web community who responded first with comments, and then with literary contributions from parts of world. A total of 53 Filipino and Filipino-American authors submitted work for publication in the new e-zine in 2001 alone. Poetry of those transplanted to the US and Europe becoming adults between cultures, were essays from souls yearning for home and short stories documenting the daily struggle to survive - a literary goldmine!
Three years later, reading the first print version of Our Own Voice still eases the dissociation one feels as an expatriate no matter the years. Here communication of the "beyond-physical definition of home" occurs. Our Own Voice has become essential in the diaspora's palpable life. A copy, within arm's reach, is a must for all Filipinos.
